LANDescape / CERAMIC LABORATORY

2014 from 11th to 25th August in the Daugavpils fortress territory held international ceramic art symposium "LANDescape / CERAMIC LABORATORY" organized by the society ‘Daugavpils Clay Art Centre’ in collaboration with the Mark Rothko Art Centre.

Thanks to the project manager Valentin Petjko the symposium took place in the Rothko centre already for the second time. This year it was assigned by an additional name - CERAMIC LABORATORY. Here were invited 16 artists from 10 countries (Latvian, Belarus, Russia, Poland, Czech Republic, Luxembourg, Romania, Turkey, Georgia and Pakistan) to join forces for creating a kind of laboratory in which to experiment and to share with experiences and know-how in different firing techniques.

Symposium activities began on 12th August at 16:00 in the Mark Rothko Centre, where the audience was invited to the opening ceremony of the exhibition – 'visiting cards' in clay brought by symposium participants showing on individual handwriting, the idea of ​​flight and the special touch of the hand.

The subsequent two weeks there was an intensive and creative work of ceramists in a newly created ceramic art studio in the Daugavpils fortress. There also took place different activities opened for public: artists’ presentation evenings; Janina Myronovas’ decal workshop; lecture about different raku techniques and local culture heritage – fermented ‘Baltic raku’, demonstration of animations about this amazing technique; from 20th to 23th August was held the festival of experimental firing technologies, during which were build and fire several kilns: traditional one with reduction, high temperature, raku and high burns, pit and barrel, kiln of bottles...

On August 24, there was the gala event of the symposium with an exhibition of new created works in the fortress bulwark at the Nicholas Gate and welcome the participants. It should be noted that each member left a gift, some art works for the M. Rothko Centre and   the festival organizer society.

After the good job on August 25th the participants were able to recuperate in a journey to the nearby Sēlija shore, where they visited grape breeder Pauls Sukatniek’s house-museum in Dviete rural district and Stellmuiža.
